Responsibilities include planning patient care for the operative case, patient education and direct patient care in accordance with clinical protocols under the direction of the Clinical Ventures Group. Works with surgeons to plan patient care needs through assuring equipment and supplies are available and functioning prior to the start of each procedure. Trains and mentors staff for the service. Our goals include providing exceptional patient care in a professional academic ambulatory care setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (may vary depending on clinic site to include the care of adults and/or children)

1. Assists physicians, working interdependently and under their direction, with intraoperative functions.

2. Assists and evaluates the patient’s positioning during procedures, assuring the proper padding and positioning devices are used correctly.

3. Under physician supervision:
a. Performs preoperative assessments and care.

b. Acts as the First Assist during surgery: including but not limited to line placement, intubation, closing incisions, etc.

c. Performs postoperative care: including hospital rounding and assisting in Out-Patient Clinics.

d. Performs endoscopic vein harvesting.

4. Performs discharge summaries and instructions for patients.

5. Utilizing strong assessment and critical thinking skills, is able to effectively triage to provide exceptional and compassionate patient care according to established protocols.

6. Provides direct patient care including but not limited to: patient teaching, medication administration, IV placement and urinary catheterization. Responsible for prescription refills per established protocol.

7. Documents all patient care accurately and thoroughly within EpicCare, the electronic medical record system (EMR).

8. Acts as a resource and mentor to provide direction and guidance to clinic staff. Delegates as appropriate.

9. Helps maintain clinic workflow, works collaboratively as a team member of the clinic staff to provide a high quality and efficient service to patients and clinic.

10. Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.

11. Participates in seminars in collaboration with the surgeon.

Qualifications

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

Education: Required:
Associate Degree in Nursing

Preferred

: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Experience:
3 years of experience preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:
Current WI RN License.

CNOR Certification

CRNFA Certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice, particularly in a clinic setting. Ability to assess patients, set priorities, identify and resolve problems effectively and efficiently. Possesses excellent organizational skills for managing workflow, coordination of patient care, anticipating the needs of the patients and physicians, establishing and maintaining effective working relationship, etc. Demonstrates reliability and flexibility. Has the temperament for dealing with people who are ill and need help. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families or caretakers, physicians and others under stressful conditions. Contributes positively to patient satisfaction. Communicates effectively with patients over the phone or in person. Works effectively with physicians and clinic staff within a complex academic medical center. Accepts delegation of tasks. Positive role model.
