Role Purpose:
The RN, Surgical Specialty Team Leader will report to the Director or Manager of Surgical Services. In addition to the job description for the Registered Nurse, the Team Leader is responsible for organizing, facilitating and ensuring that individual surgical specialty areas are effectively operationalized.

Role Responsibilities:
Monitors the daily operation of the surgical specialty, promoting and assuring a high standard of care. Review of cases at least a week out, two days before, and the day before surgery to ensure supplies and equipment are available. Clarifies needs with surgeons, collaborates with Material Services, Sterile Processing, and vendors for product selection. Reviews conflicts for special equipment and resolve before the day of surgery.

Monitors compliance with accreditation standards and implements practice changes as necessary. Maintain knowledge of evidence based standards and advancements in practice. Collaborate with department leadership and the Advanced Practice Nurse to advance evidence based practice in the specialty. Reviews and revises department policies and procedures as need ed.

Maintains and updates the procedural cards. Ensure surgeons have a card for each procedure that lists needs for the case. Ensures procedure cards are complete and well-constructed so that a novice to the service can do basic set-ups for the case including direction for the RN and ST in the room. Meet with every surgeon annually to do a formal review of their procedural cards and update product changes on the cards. Collaborate with surgeons within the specialty to move towards standardization.

Support education needs in the specialty. Assist leadership in developing an orientation plan for new employees that includes mentoring and clinical orientation in the specialty, development of clinical skills, knowledge of equipment, and procedures within the specialty.

Surgical Instrumentation: Maintain knowledge of instrumentation used in specialty. Work closely with the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) to ensure sets are complete and availab le on the day of surgery. Ensure that there are an adequate number of sets to avoid immediate use sterilization. Collaborate with surgeons and team members of the specialty to standardize sets as much as possible. Review sets yearly with the SPD clinical coordinator to ensure they remain current based on IFU's and surgeons' needs. Collaborate with SPD to ensure sets are maintained.

Provides input into capital budget requests and product selection.

Participates and assists with new program development and/or implements new procedures. Onboard new surgeons to the OR including development of new procedure cards, review of instrumentation, equipment and review of safety processes, policies and procedures. Collaborate with department leadership and other affected departments to ensure a new case can be supported, i.e., IT and plant management. Identify education needs and workflows for new procedures. Collaborate with departments impacted by workflow changes to validate proposed workflows.

Acts as a liaison between hospital departments to resolve interdepartmental issues, updates director/manager for surgical section activities and issues, and to those outside the surgical specialty area regarding activities and issues relating to the surgical specialty (vendors). Maintain current vendor information to the specialty and the type of support they provide for cases, i.e., monitoring or instrumentation.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
Licensure (as required below) signifies education requirements have been met

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin

A minimum of two years current operating suite experience at St. Mary's Hospital

Specialty certification within one year of appointment

Current employees must maintain BLS certification

Attend continuing education in the specialty and share knowledge with team members

< b>Preferred Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred

Department Specific:
A minimum of 60 worked hours per two week pay period and rotating shifts. Characteristics needed to be successful in the position includes leadership traits of positivity, self-motivation, delegation, customer service and being a role model to others. Team Leaders have to be approachable and demonstrate empathy and an understanding of the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of the team and how to support and motivate the individual and team. The team leader should have excellent communication skills to ensure the team and physicians are well informed about changes in the specialty. It is essential to be focused, detail oriented and proactive, with timely follow-through to ensure everything goes smoothly on the day of surgery.
