Role Purpose:
Under the general direction of either the Pharmacy Supervisor at St. Mary's Hospital or the Institutional Pharmacy Specialist â" Purchasing and Inventory Management at Dean M edical Group, this position is responsible for the procurement, receiving and control of medications and other pharmaceutical products as necessary. Performs job functions in accordance with SSM's mission and values and is in line with State and Federal laws, Joint Commission regulations and the pharmacy department's policies and practice standards. The Specialist interacts with staff, patients and the public in a courteous and respectful manner. Must be flexible to work on an as needed basis. May be required to travel to sites where needed.
Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for purchasing, receiving, and control of medications.
2. Adheres to approved invent ory par levels.
3. Assures orders are accurately and efficiently entered into the database, picked, and packaged, appropriately. Ensures that all medications are placed in the appropriate location for delivery at Dean and have a readable barcode at St. Mary's.
4. Implements measures to lower costs.
5. Ensures that the order is entered, including pricing, in an accurate and timely manner.
6. Upon receiving medications, assures items are restocked appropriately with the shortest dated medication in front.
7. Ensures that all purchased goods represent the best available options based on medication availability, Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) contracts and distributor recommendations.
8. Coordinates the removal of expired products by an approved third party reverse distributor.
9. Maintains accurate records for all medications, especially controlled substances. Orders controlled substances and ensures all requir ed documentation is complete per state, federal and Corporate Policies.
10. Authorizes invoices, reconciles statements, and corrects any errors.
11. Schedules return authorizations and ensures appropriate credit.
12. Responsible for evaluating and completing the appropriate process for medication/product recalls.
13. Manages medication shortages with direction from other pharmacy staff.
14. Participates in Quarterly Business Reviews, when applicable.
15. Satisfies corporate responsibilities required training and competencies in a timely manner.
16. Assists pharmacy leadership in compiling statistical data relating to inventory control and management when necessary.
17. At Dean, reviews customer requests for completeness and deviations from normal ordering patterns or Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee (P&T) recommendations. Contacts requestor for follow up.
18. Serves on department teams as ass igned.
19. Attends department meetings and in-services to keep abreast of recent developments.
Qualifications
Required:
1. A high school graduate or equivalent
2. Minimum 2 years of experience as a pharmacy technician within a community or hospital setting.
3. Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or obtain within six months of hire.
4. Strong computer skills for entering and retrieving information from the pharmacy computer system.
5. Strong customer service and communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with customers and staff over the phone, computer or in person for communicating in a calm and respectful manner in stressful situations.
6. Thorough knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology and medications.
7. Good time management and problem solving skills with the ability to work independently in a fast paced ever changin g environment, meet deadlines, establish priorities, be flexible, and maintain effective working relationships.
8. Must be able to travel to sites as needed.
Preferred:
1. Experience in purchasing and inventory management preferred.
2. Previous experience with Microsoft Word or Excel programs or similar programs.
3. Completion of an accredited pharmacy training program.

5. The ability to safely lift 20 pounds frequently
6. Ability to push/pull carts/objects that weigh up to 100 pounds.
7. Ability to us personal protective equipment when working with chemicals or drugs, such as Hazardous/Toxic Drugs.
