DEFINITION:
Provide assistance with rooming patients, obtaining patient histories, and all office procedures and tasks as directed.Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adult and pediatric patient; instruct patients in all urine collection procedures and testing requirements; participate in education of students and new personnel; work with computer; communicate in a manner that promotes professionalism as well as a comfortable experience for the patien! t.
Required Skills
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITE! S (this may not include all of the dutes assigned)
Room Patients
Obtain brief patient history and complaint
Order x-rays when appropriate
Assist with office procedures
Provide telephone advice to patients as directed
Communicate with providers regarding patient calls
Call in prescription refills as directed
Schedule hospital and office tests, procedures and surgeries
Communicate with hospitals and other offices as directed by providers
Complete referral appointments
Act as a liaison for physicians
Update the medical record by filing dictation and test results as they return to the department
Pre-certify for surgical procedures and tests
Assist physicians with scheduling
Facilitate completion of forms (ex. W/C, insurance, etc by the physicians)
Maintains patient confidentiality
Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood! products
Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients according to established protocol
Order entry in the laboratory information system
Point of care (POC) testing and resulting in the laboratory information system
Identifies and labels specimens per guidelines
Maintains knowledge of all routine container and minimum volumes required for specimen collection
Assists in care of patient prior to, during and after collection
Instructs patients on urine collection with proper completion of forms
Cleans and maintains equipment in work area
Inventories supplies for re-order
Attends required meetings
Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs
Assists with laboratory reception duties
Assists in specimen processing
Other duties as assigned.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Expos! ure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, potentially infectious ! materials, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Work requires constant contact with patients.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking required for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
Required Experience
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Must display excellent teamwork. Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of clinic and laboratory policies and procedures. Must possess good communication skills. Promote a comfortable phlebotomy in a professional manner at all times. Able to handle clinic information and activities in confidence. Ability to work tactfully under pressure. Able to maintain a high level of accuracy. Able to follow detailed instructions. Dependable in atten! dance and punctuality. Willing to work as needed including overtime. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Possess a strong customer service attitude.
QUALIFICATIONS:
CMA with current Wisconsin license preferred, current CPR certification, must have a high school diploma. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Prefer a minimum of one year of phlebotomist experience.
