Position Summary
The Coder â" Inpatient Specialist provides specific assistance to the Coding Team Leader and serves as a lead worker and resource for Inpatient Coders. This position is responsible for maintaining a high level of knowledge of all Inpatient Coding department polices, guidelines, procedures and workflows. The Inpatient Coding staff, under the supervision of the Coding Team Leader, is responsible for abstracting clinical information and assigning CPT-4 and ICD-9 codes from medical records and documents to support physician professional fee! s, including but not limited to, inpatient evaluation and mana! gement (E/M) services (e.g. initial admits, consultations, discharges, etc.), bedside and other invasive procedures, global surgical services, anesthesia and ambulatory surgery services in accordance with American Medical Associationâs and Health Care Finance Associationâs documentation guidelines, American Hospital Association Official Coding Guidelines (ICD-9), American Medical Associationâs CPT-4 definitions and instructions, and third party payor guidelines, including Medicare and Medicaid specific policies. They are also responsible to monitor and follow-up on pending documentation required to perform abstraction and coding for assigned units/services; to assist in the updates of encounter forms to incorporate new and revised codes; to identify areas of educational need; to serve as a liaison and educator between physicians, coworkers and other staff; to research and resolve coding issues; and to answer questions as they relate to documentation and coding, as wel! l as entering professional hospital charges directly into Epic Resolute.
Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent with certification as a RHIT, CPC, or CCS certification, with three years healthcare experience of which two years must be as an Inpatient Coder.
Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and disease process.
Detailed knowledge of and how to interpret the contents of a medical record.
Detailed knowledge of CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding.
Knowledge of reimbursement practices for physician services.
Ability to work independently.
Establish work priorities and adjust them as the circumstances dictate.
Ability to work well in busy area with constant interruptions.
Maintain patient and Medical Center confidentiality.
PC experience; typing skills; good oral, written and problem solving skills.
Energetic and flexibl! e in working as part of the team.
Preferred:
One ye! ar professional surgical coding experience (CPT).
Experience with an electronic medical record

Salary Range
The minimum hourly wage is $21.01. Several factors are considerd when determining final compensation.
