The Tomah VA Medical Center, located in Tomah, Wisconsin has a current opening for a full time Nursing Assistant. The position is located on 402B, Rehabilitation Unit which is a 37 bed open unit, also equipped as a wander guard unit, which provides skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and hospice care. The patient population includes patients with a variety of medical and psychiatric diagnoses such as COPD, CHF, dementia, etc. Patients range in age from adult to frail elderly (30-90+). Care includes assistance with ADLÂ's, medical support, ambulation, recreation therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.

Grade/Step/Salary will be recommended by a Professional Standards Board and is based upon education and/or experience.

DUTIES:
DUTIES: Performs a variety of personal care or nursing care activities which do not require practical or vocational nursing licensure, or professional nurse education. Performs work assisting other medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment or patient illnesses or medical conditions. Assists providers and nurses in the care and treatment of patients receiving medical, psychiatric, or outpatient treatment. Performs simple treatment procedures such as changing sterile dressings; applying or removing binders, arm slings, dressing, and bandages, or applying warm and cool packs. Incumbent will administer certain medication as required upon successful completion of the Medication Administration for Unlicensed Personnel Course. Performs standardized treatment procedures requiring considerable training and experience such as performing oral-pharyngeal suctions, setting up and regulation the flow of oxygen, and administering prescribed bowel care and topical skin treatment. Observes patients for change in conditions and reports them to the Registered Nurse. Assist with patient care for patients experiencing extremes of behavior, including the severely depressed, suicidal, or homicidal patients and the drug or alcohol abuse patient. Incumbent enters specific information into the patientsÂ' electronic medical record. Performs direct patient support work including personal patient care, reinforcing of patient teaching and facilitating delivery of care, such as helping patients participate in group activities and programming, get to clinic appointments, get to meals, etc, and meet Treatment Plan goals. Transports patient via wheel chair or stretch, and/or accompanies ambulatory patients who need assistance. Performs simple personal care duties such as bathing, nail, hair, foot care, oral hygiene and shaving. Assist patient with feeding based on prescribed diet. Has the ability to assist during emergency situations as needed, including knowledge of CPR.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and similar activities using appropriate lift systems. The work involves heavy lifting, use of lifting device and the ability to perform complex procedures, such as CPR and Prevention and Management of Disruptive (PMDB) activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to infection and contagious diseases. Special gloves, gowns or masks are required as safety precautions. Work areas are noisy with recurring turbulence and unpredictable conditions generated by patients.

WORK SCHEDULE: DAYS WITH WEEKEND ROTATION

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
GS-4: Must have at least (6) months of General Experience. This is any experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity for a nursing assistant position or processes of this occupation. *** AND *** At least (6) months of Specialized Experience. Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a nursing assistant. Examples of specialized experience: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement. Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients; OR successfully completed a 2 year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of this nursing assistant position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION.)

GS 5: Must have at least one (1) year of SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE equivalent to the GS-4 level in order to qualify at the GS-5 level. Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a nursing assistant. Examples of specialized experience: Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care. Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus. Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement. Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients; OR Completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the nursing assistant position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION.); OR Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience which may be used to meet total GS-5 requirements. For GS-5 level only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. One full year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION.)

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
