JOB SUMMARY
The pacemaker nurse is a Registered Nurse who utilizes the nursing process to assess, evaluate, plan and deliver comprehensive care to patients with specific dysrhythmias especially those requiring pacemakers. The nurse functions independently as an extension of the physician in providing care with the pacemaker patient. The services provided include evaluation of pacemakers function, battery life, need for program adjustments to! optimize pacemaker performance, education of patients and fam! ily, and telephone triage of patients. The nurse interacts with clinic physicians, referral physicians, clinical personnel and community agencies to provide optimal care to the patient and their family with arrhythmias.
Required Skills
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES (This may not include all duties assigned.)
- "Devices" will be used to refer to pacemakers, defibrillators and implantable recorders.
2. Perform patient assessments when seeing patients in the clinic or via phone.
3. Provide device follow-up services, in the office setting, transtelephonically and other forms of remote transmissions.
4. Perform any programming of devices as directed by the physician.
5. Documents results of assessments, pacemaker checks and special procedures to meet medical, legal, and future follow-up requirement! s.
6. Make nursing assessments of patient's adjustment to their pacemakers utilizing history taking, physical assessment, and device interrogation to optimize device settings.
7. Collaborate with cardiologists and surgeons in the selection of the pacemaker system for specific patients after careful assessment of individual needs and disease processes.
8. Maintain individual records on dysrhythmia patients being followed.
9. Initiate and maintain communication with referring doctors, including information on pacemaker function, rhythms and devices, as well as routine referral letters.
10. Share in the planning and decision making involved in the development of policies, unit design, budget process (capital equipment and operating) and procedure development required for the management of patients with various pacemakers.
11. Identify patient and family needs for knowledge, level of readiness, and comprehensive abilities an! d develop and implement an educational program utilizing individual ins! truction and group interaction to meet their emotional and psychosocial needs. Special emphasis is placed on the long-term adjustment of the patient to his environment and individual circumstances.

Must be able to maintain self-control under stressful situations and workload pressures without exhibiting negative behaviors.
Ability to deliver lectures, conduct interviews, counsel or advise patients and evaluate technical data.
Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, preferably BSN. Evidence of continuing education in the field of cardiology, especially in the field of dysrhythmias.
Current R.N. licensure in the State of Wisconsin.
Certified in BLS is required; ACLS certification is desirable.
Two to five years experience in cardiovascular nursing. Intensive care background preferred. Knowledge of ECGs and rhythm interpret! ation.
Ability to perform physical assessment and basic histor! y taking.
Must have good working knowledge of the personal computer system and multiple electronic devices used in this field. Experience in use of the software PaceArt is preferred.
While doing transtelephonic pacemaker checks, must be able to sit for five to six hours.
While adjusting settings on pacemakers, must be able to perform fine hand manipulations.
To move equipment where needed, must be able to lift 5 to 55 pounds (i.e., programmers), 5 to 15 times per eight hour shift.
To perform physicals and pacemaker checks must have a good sense of hearing and good visual acuity.
Logical or scientific thinking to solve problems, several abstract and concrete variables.
Arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, li! fting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds (programmers) in addition to the lifting required for patient transfers. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions. All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with a disability.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office environment. Involves phone contact with a various array of patients, employees, and providers. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and emergencies.
